Adam Webmail Support– In my recent search for a definition of “webmail,” I came across the following Wikipedia entry:

The term “webmail” is a neologism that refers to any method of checking email via a web browser over the Internet. This term encompasses web-based email services that are similar to online accounts and any system in which email is checked and managed via the web using a mail client such as Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird that contains and receives email using IMAP POP3 and other protocols.

Further, Google’s Gmail service allows you to use both an IMAP (for receiving and downloading) and an SMTP (for sending and receiving) server (for sending and uploading).

One of the most significant issues with webmail services like Gmail is that they rely on their servers to perform mail checks. This implies that if your email accounts are configured as IMAP or POP3 servers, you won’t check them using a client like Thunderbird or Outlook Express.

Due to the growing popularity of webmail, there are now applications that allow you to use any Gmail account as an IMAP or POP3 server for your preferred mail client. These tools function reasonably well, but they don’t always provide 100 percent happiness, and Gmail has been known to block access to these apps if it notices them unfavorably exploiting its servers.

The only (current) option I’m aware of is an extension called “Webmail Lite,” which may be found at www.adam.com.au. It enables Gmail users to configure their favorite email applications as POP or IMAP servers and use those clients to check and administer their Gmail accounts.

“Webmail Lite” adds a button next to the “Gmail” button in the upper right corner of your browser toolbar. When you press this button, a menu appears that allows you to use your Gmail account as an IMAP or POP server to check or send emails.

Because Gmail’s IMAP server doesn’t seem to recognize the folders linked with your client’s mailbox, you have to select this button each time you click on a message to link, requiring you to choose between “Inbox” and “Other.” This can easily be fixed by adding a new folder named “Gmail” to your client and referring it to “[Gmail]/All Mail.”
